Data & Calculation Methodology
The mathematical formulas, circadian thresholds, and data pipelines powering NomadSync.
1. The Dual-Engine Philosophy
Traditional cost-of-living indices rank cities purely by financial affordability. However, for a remote professional, financial cost and time synchronization are intrinsically coupled. Living in an ultra-cheap city is futile if you lose your remote employment due to missed synchronous client standups or if chronic sleep deprivation ruins your productivity.
NomadSync calculates an overall Nomad Match Score (0 to 100) using a multi-factor weighted equation:
2. Timezone Overlap Mathematics
Our timezone engine computes the exact intersection between a remote team's active office hours and a nomad's healthy circadian waking window.
The Formula:
Let $H_c$ represent the set of standard client working hours (typically 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM local client time):
The nomad's corresponding local hour $H_n$ is defined by the UTC offset delta $\Delta UTC$:
We define a "Healthy Waking Window" $W_n$ based on the chosen work shift:
- Standard Shift: 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM local (10-hour window)
- Flexible Shift: 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM local (16-hour window)
- Early Bird: 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM local (9-hour window)
- Night Owl: 12:00 PM to 12:00 AM local (12-hour window)
The Golden Overlap Hours count is the cardinality of the intersection where the client is on the clock AND the nomad is in their active window without entering sleep hours (11:00 PM to 7:00 AM).
3. Cost of Living Aggregation Model
Rather than generic consumer baskets that assume 30-year mortgages and local schooling, our model isolates the specific marginal basket of an international remote worker:
| Component | Weight | Primary Data Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Furnished 1BR Rent | 45% | Airbnb monthly discount averages, local coliving portals, expat leases |
| Coworking Pass | 10% | Published hot-desk/dedicated desk rates at vetted coworking spaces |
| Dining & Cafes | 22% | Specialty coffee pricing, mid-range dinner and street food sampling |
| Groceries & Household | 12% | Supermarket staples (milk, eggs, chicken, fresh produce, water) |
| Transit & Mobility | 6% | Monthly metro passes, Grab/Uber ride averages, scooter leases |
| Connectivity (SIM/5G) | 5% | 50GB+ prepaid tourist/nomad SIM packages on top local telecom operators |
4. Wi-Fi & Infrastructure Verification
Nomads depend completely on stable upload and download bandwidth. Our broadband index references:
- Speedtest Global Index: National and municipal fixed broadband rankings.
- Coworking Audits: Verification that spaces maintain redundant fiber connections and generator backup systems.
5. Continuous Update Protocol
Data is reviewed and refreshed quarterly to account for macroeconomic inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and new legislative developments in Digital Nomad Visas.
